How to Install VITEK Moldings

Detailed Advice is Provided Here for all VITEK Products
The information is organized by product material and then by product type.

Installing Adornador¬Polyurethane Products
VITEK polyurethane moldings are easy to install. Each is designed to give the appearance of a plaster molding at about one-half of the cost. In terms of cost and ease of use, these moulded polyurethane products also compare very favorably with wood.

VITEK polyurethane moldings have many advantages over wood moldings. To obtain the same depth and definition of enrichment these one piece products offer, several separate pieces of wood would be required. Polyurethane is impervious to moisture, so painted surfaces will not peel. Polyurethane will not rot, crack, decay or be subject to insect damage. Installation of polyurethane moldings is easier and faster. No blocking or nailing strips are required.

Nevertheless, when installing polyurethane moldings, treat them just as if they were wood. Pieces can be cut, drilled, nailed, and screwed just like wood. Nails and screws do not require pre-drilled holes. We recommend the use of trim head drywall screws as fasteners. They are self countersinking and leave a hole that is easy to fill.

VITEK polyurethane products can be installed indoors or out. In an interior installation, we recommend that you use Acrylic Siliconized Latex Caulk when using corner and divider blocks with polyurethane products. This will act as a bedding surface which will fill any gaps caused by the unevenness of walls or ceilings. The same material can be used to blend joints and edges. Excess caulk can be removed with a wet cloth.

In an exterior installation, or when installing products onto cement walls or ceilings, use Premium Construction Adhesive and screws into anchors suitable for the substrate on which parts will be mounted. For more information about exterior, or complex interior installations, click here.

Indoors or out, a quality sandable, paintable, non-shrinking latex filler such as Instafil Spackling should be used to fill screw or nail holes.

Take Up
Like wood moldings, polyurethane moldings are subject to dimensional changes (take up) following installation. However, VITEK crown moldings and decorative moldings are the most densely packed polyurethane architectural products available. Take up for VITEK crown molding or decorative molding will not exceed 1/32" per foot of length (2.5 mm per m). This is one-half of the take up of a comparable wood molding.

Moldings should be stored in a cool, dry area before installation. VITEK crown moldings should be cut for length such that pieces fit tightly. Allow from 1/16" to 1/8" (1 to 3 mm) extra length per section and spring crown molding pieces into place, when possible. The use of PL Premium adhesive or epoxy is recommended on all crown or decorative molding joints in installations which do not include corner blocks. PL adhesive or epoxy should also be used where molding lengths meet blocks.
